UFC On Versus 2: Results and Opinions

On Sunday, Versus held its 2nd UFC event. It was a decent card, with some pretty decent fights. The main standouts were John Howard’s  swollen eye, The Fireball Kid’s knockout of Tyson Griffin and the fact that whatever you throw at Jon Jones, he’s going to demolish it in a quick and ferocious fashion.

Takanori Gomi Vs Tyson Griffin

Myself and the majority of the team at MMA UK firmly believed that Tyson Griffin was going to bounce back after his loss to Evan Dunham and take out Takanori Gomi quickly and efficiently – seems like we were more than wrong.

Gomi certainly didn’t look good in his last fight against Kenny Florian and I believed that the one top-rated lightweight had had his heyday in Pride FC. Apparently not, as he knocked out Griffin cold in the first round with a accurate strike. Griffin tried to claim that he wasn’t knocked out, but it’s pretty easy to tell that the referee got the decision right.

John Howard Vs Jake Ellenberger

John Howard had really looked impressive during his last few fights and so has Ellenberger, so we new that sparks would fly when these two met. Being the fantastic wrestler that Ellenberger is, he used that to his advantage, clearly wanting no part of Howards stand up game. When Ellenberger did try and stand with Howard he nearly got rocked more than once. In the end, Ellenberger won out with impressive ground and pound, battering Howards face so badly that he couldn’t see out of one of his eyes.

Mark Munoz Vs Yushin Okami

I can’t say I was really impressed with this fight. It was really just a snore-fest. Although both fighters had shown some impressive striking in their previous fights, this was practically a fight between two wrestlers – it almost seemed as if they were afraid to strike with each other. I do believe that Okami won the fight, even thought it was a split decision.

Jon Jones Vs Vladimir Matyushenko

When is this man going to get a challenge. I think the best way to describe the way Jon Jones beat Matyushenko, was complete and utter violation. There was nothing to flashy about the way fought. The fact that he beat an experienced fighter like Matyushenko who is known for his ground game, on the ground and made it look easy was the impressive thing. From a takedown, to the crucifix position, to some vicious elbows, Jones showed that he’s ready to step up.

Message to Joe Silva – Please give this kid a real challenge!
