Strikeforce:Houston Predictions

Two MMA events in less than five days – oh how spoilt are we! Tonight in Houston,Texas, King Mo Lawal defends his Light Heavyweigh title against Brazilian Rafael Cavalcante, Ronaldo Souza and Tim Kennedy fight for the vacanet Middleweight title, former Elite XC lightweight champion faces Jorge Gurgel and Heavyweight prospect Bobby Lashley goes against IFL veteren Chad Griggs.

Bobby Lashley Vs Chad Griggs

Bobby Lashley is a big prospect for Strikeforce. Some would argue that when he was signed by Scott Coker and Co. they were hoping he’d have the same impact that Brock Lesnar had in the UFC. However, unlike his UFC counterpart, Lashley has had a significantly slower rise to the top than Lesnar. In fact, the majority of MMA fans would say that he’s no where near the top at the moment. The problem with Lashley is that he hasn’t fought any real competition.

When Wes Sims is the biggest “name” opponent that you’ve ever fought and you’ve got the hot prospect tag, it’s slightly disappointing that the fighter isn’t moving up a level. Lashley faces Chad Griggs, a former IFL fighter who only has 1 loss to his name. I think it’s going to be a win for Lashley via TKO in the 2nd round. However, if Griggs manages to beat Lashley – we’ll be baring witness to the falling star of Lashleys career.

KJ Noons Vs Jorge Gurgel

This is possibly my most anticipated fight. I’m a big fan of KJ Noons and I really respect Jorge Gurgel for his never say die attitude. I think the main issue in this fight, is the same issue that always seems to occur with Jorge Gurgel – why doesn’t he take fighters to the ground. Gurgel is a BJJ black belt, who prefers to slug it out with his opponents and that usually gives us exciting fights, but can also cause him to lose. It’s one thing to box with someone whose on the same stand-up level as you, but it’s going to be difficult for Gurgel to try and outstrike KJ Noons, who is a very impressive boxer.

I feel that Gurgel is going to continue to have exciting fights and try and knockout Noon, which says to me that Noons will catch him somewhere in the second round with a KO.

Middleweight Championship Fight

Ronaldo Souza Vs Tim Kennedy

After Jake Shields left for the UFC, the Strikeforce Middleweight title was left in limbo. Tonight we will crown a new Middleweight champion in either Ronaldo Souza or Tim Kennedy. Tim Kennedy is a tough fighter, who is certainly willing to strike with any fighter, whereas Ronaldo Souza is a fantastic BJJ fighter. I’m going to give this fight to Ronaldo Souza though as I think he’ll be able to take Kennedy down and control him until he’s ready to lock in a submission.

Souza via Submission/Round 3

Light Heavyweight Championship

King Mo Lawal Vs Rafael Cavalcante

King Mo has stated during interviews that he feels as if he’s the underdog in this fight and he knows that Cavalante is going to look for the knockout and I’ve got to agree with him. Cavalcante is a serious fighter who has knockout power and very good Jiu Jitsu (he trains with the Nogueria brothers).

However, King Mo is no fool, in fact he’s one o the best tactians in MMA right now. If he can utilize his gameplans properly, then King Mo will get the decision. However, I feel as if Mo might get caught by Cavalcante and get the knockout. The main question is – how good is Lawals cardio?
