The Debate – Can Performance Enhancement Drugs Destroy MMA?

Every sport has cheaters in it, it’s a sad, yet truthful fact. Maradona had the hand of god, Baseball had Barry Bonds, Mark Mcguire, Jose Consenco (probably everyone else too). For some people, they’ll go through any means neccessary to win. However, none of these sports have truly died because of the peope who cheated. They’ve carried on and overcame. The main thing that Baseball, Football, Soccer and any other sport has in common is that they all have a history that is stronger and more important to the fans than the cheaters in the sport.

MMA UK looks at the “For” and “Againsts” for whether or not PED’s can destroy MMA?

Anybody that thinks that MMA couldn’t be destroyed by fighters in prominent positions in their respective companies taking performance enhancement drugs is a fool. MMA is still considered a bloodsport by those who aren’t fans of the sport and is still having issues with getting it legalised in some states in America.

With someone who is as high profile and is as much as a media-whore as Chael Sonnen, it’s only going to put the sport in bad situation. This is worse than Josh Barnett puttng Affliction out of business or Sean Sherk winning, then having his title taken away from him. This effects the UFC and MMA as Sonnen is a marketable figure, who if he’d of won that fight would’ve been mouthing off to every and any publication that would listen. If this had came out and he’d of won, it would’ve made more of a  mockery of the fantastic fight that Sonnen and Silva had. Sadly, if this is true,  we’ll see that Sonnen was everything that he called his opponent – a fake and a fraud

Performance Enhancement Drugs will not destroy MMA, but they will tarnish the sport, but not forever. It’s not as if Sonnen was the first person to be caught using PED’s in MMA. If MMA can survive the Josh Barnett fiasco, then surely they can survive this. MMA is currently one of the most exciting and fastest rising sports in the world, so aslong as they continue to keep putting on good cards, then things shall be fine.

If PED’s are going to destroy anything, it’s going to be the person taking them. How ironic that something that could make you better, can also potentially destroy your career.

Dana White was quoted during an interview with Kevin Iole  as saying this regarding the Sonnen situation.

“What else do I do?” White said. “We’ve spent millions of dollars – literally, millions of dollars – to try to get this thing regulated so they can be tested by the government. Do you know how much it costs us to put on that fighter seminar every year? Let me tell you, we’re bringing guys in from all over the world. We have guys from England, Germany, Croatia, Australia, Korea. We have 350 guys under contract and they’re coming from all over the world. It costs us a (expletive) ton, but we do it because it’s important.

“When one of them fails a test, the government is going to fine them and suspend them and tell them they can’t make a living for a year. So should I come in after they’ve already lost the ability to make a living for a year and been fined all this money and, in the worst economic disaster in the history of the world, fine them another huge amount and take away their ability to make a living even longer?

I think Uncle Dana explains quite thoroughly who gets destroyed when it comes to PED’s
