Michael Bisping: It’s Now Or Never

Michael Bisping is one of MMA’s leading stars. He’s especially pretty big over here in the UK, as he’s one our leading sportsmen and in my opinion one of the main reasons as to why the UFC has sold out the London 02 arena for UFC 120. For all of Bisping’s qualities, showman-esque qualities and marketability – he has one issue, possible missed potential.

Bisping has achieved a lot in his career so far, don’t get me wrong. He’s been a stand out fighter on Cage Rage, winning their Light Heavyweight title. He won season 3 of TUF and was the winning coach on TUF 10. Most importantly, he’s brought MMA into the minds of british fans. All this should point too Bisping being a champion in the middleweight division. Sadly for him, he shares the division with arguably the pound for poun best MMA fighter on the planet, Anderson Silva.

There are other things going against him, such as the fact that although he’s only lost three times in his career, he’s lost to three former champions (Dan Henderson, Rashad Evans, Wanderlei Silva). Does this mean that Bisping isn’t a top guy in his division? I don’t think so. What I do think is that he’s in the prime of his career and this is his time to really push through and show what he’s got.

On Saturday, he faces Yoshihiro Akiyama, a fighter who is no slouch (If you never saw his fight with Chris Leben, then what are you doing with your life?) and I have no doubt that Akiyama will test Bisping throughout the entire fight. This is the turning point in Bispings career. If he beats Akiyama, then the sky is the limit. However, if he cannot get past Akiyama, then more question will be asked regarding his quality and whether or not he can be the first British championin the UFC.

I’m not sure, but come Saturday night, I think we’ll all have a better idea.
