MMA UK’s Resident MMA Analyst Kris Mentor Picks his Top Ten Heavyweights

This week on inside MMA, the legendary Bas ‘El Guapo’ Rutten put out his top ten heavyweights in order with Alistair Overeem leading the list. Admittedly it was a partially bias call as they are both Dutch. However let’s have a look at the rest of the list.

1. Alistair Overeem-Strikeforce
2. Cain Velasquez- UFC
3. Fabricio Werdum-Strikeforce
4. Fedor Emilianenko – Strikforce
5. Junior Dos Santos – UFC
6. Brock  Lesnar – UFC
7. Shane Carwin – UFC

8. Frank Mir- UFC
9. Antonio Rodrigo Nogeuria – UFC
10. Antonio Silva – Strikeforce

I’m a huge fan of El Guapo but I am not a huge fan of this list. So I thought I’d put out my opinion of the heavyweight division.

1. Alistair Overeem
2. Cain Velasquez
3. Brock Lesnar
4. Junior Dos Santos
5. Shane Carwin
6. Roy Nelson
7. Frank Mir
8. Fedor Emilianenko
9. Antonio Silva
10. Fabricio Werdum

This list is purely based on what I believe in terms of skill sets, styles and potential. Little is noted based on track record.

I think Alistair Overeemis the best heavyweight. However,  I don’t think he can beat Brock Lesnar, just because I don’t think he has the wrestling ability to get up from the bottom. However, I think Overeem would take apart Valasquez. Overeem is a MUCH better striker than Valasquez, he’s bigger than Valasquez and he has good cardio for a man of his size.

Fedor is 8th due to his last 3 fights. He got owned by Arlovski until the KO, was getting owned by Rogers until the KO and got completely owned in a triangle by Febricio Werdum. Fedor hasn’t produced a pound for pound worthy performance let alone fought a pound for pound worthy fighter in years.

Fabricio Werdum, although coming of a victory against the supposed pound for pound best fighter (physically makes me sick that people think that) he hasn’t got the wrestling ability to take down opponents to bring them into his realm on the ground. A bit like Frank Mir but Mir’s stand up owns Wedrum’s in comparison. Also, if he did have a rematch with Fedor I will put hefty cash behind the Russian. With Silva’s domination of Arlovski I believe that he can beat Werdum in a rematch, he destroyed him in the 1st round when they last fought but then strayed away from the game plan. Please remember his last UFC fight before people start hyping up this guy.

Brendan Schaub is a worthy mention. Depending on his next fight will decide whether I place him in that list or not.
