Learning How To Train MMA: The Youtube Way

Anybody that believes that  people who go in to any sort of Mixed Martial Arts competition and don’t train can win are just straight up idiots. Even someone like BJ Penn found out that if you don’t train, then you will find out how tough the octagon can be for you – the hard way.

However, if you can’t afford to go to a gym to learn your basic MMA  or you’ve got a little set-up in your house which allows you to do any sort of training, then MMA UK would like to give you the basic principles of the training – or try to :). We’ve compiled a bunch of really interesting youtube videos and articles for you guys to get some sort of knowledge on how a serious MMA esque gym session could be like.

1. Can you take a punch to the stomach?

A smart fighter won’t always go for headkicks or punches to the temple. Sometimes a well placed shot to the stomach can stop a fighter in his tracks. Ask this guy. Definitely a future Knockout of The Week.

Also a fantastic article by Raymond Ho, one of MMA UK’s friends, describes throughly how to get hard abs.

2. Cardio is King

There’s arguably nothing worse than seeing a fighter “gas” early in a fight. It means that they didn’t train hard enough on their cardio. If your opponent is feeling fine in the 5th round and you’re feeling as if you’re about to cough up a lung, then you’re training was a waste. Here’s how to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Now if you want to talk about cardio, then the fight between Clay Guida and Diego Sanchez is the perfect example of two fighters who trained hard with their cardio.

Sometimes find that working on their cardio is easier whilst training other things. Just because you can be run on a treadmill for an hour doesn’t mean you can last 25 mins in a cage with someone.

3. If You Can’t Push The Weights, Then I’ve got My Money On The Other Guy

Strength is obviously a key factor in your training schedule. You may have a perfectly precise punch, but it doesn’t mean anything if you don’t have the power to back it and this is where the strength aspect of the training comes in.
